What You’ll Need:
Jumper cables (preferably heavy-duty)A working car with a good battery (or a portable jump starter)Protective gloves and goggles (optional, but recommended)
Step 1:
Position the Vehicles SafelyPark the working car close enough to the dead car so the jumper cables reach both batteries.
Turn off both cars completely — including lights, AC, and radio. Set both vehicles in park (P) for automatic or neutral (N) for manual transmissions. Pull the handbrake for safety.
Step 2:
Connect the Jumper Cables in the Correct Order
1. Red to dead: Attach the red (positive) clamp to the positive terminal (+) on the dead battery.
2. Red to donor: Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal (+) on the working battery.
3. Black to donor: Attach the black (negative) clamp to the negative terminal (−) on the working battery.
4. Black to ground: Attach the other black clamp to a bare metal surface on the dead car’s engine block — NOT directly on the dead battery.
Important: Attaching the final black clamp to a grounded metal part instead of the battery reduces the risk of sparks and battery explosion.
Step 3:
Start the Working CarTurn on the engine of the working vehicle. Let it run for 2 to 5 minutes to allow some current to flow into the dead battery. Gently rev the engine of the working car to improve power flow.
Step 4:
Start the Dead Car now, try starting the dead vehicle. If it starts, let it run while still connected for a few more minutes. If it doesn’t, wait another 2–3 minutes and try again.
If it still won’t start after multiple tries, the battery may be damaged or there’s a deeper electrical issue.
Step 5:
Disconnect the Cables Carefully (Reverse Order)
1. Remove the black clamp from the grounded metal part.
2. Remove the black clamp from the working battery.
3. Remove the red clamp from the working battery.
4. Finally, remove the red clamp from the dead battery. Don’t let the clamps touch during removal.
After the Jumpstart: What Next? Keep the jumped car running for 20–30 minutes or take a short drive to allow the alternator to charge the battery. If the car dies again soon after, the battery may need to be replaced or there may be an issue with your alternator.
